How to Treat Thermal Burns

If you're not wearing the correct type of gear when welding
or doing any job where you are exposed to extreme heat,
there are times when you may burn yourself.
Here are some tips on how to handle burns properly:

First, there are 3 types of burns:
First-degree burns are mild burns that damage only the outer layer of skin.
They cause reddening on the outer layer of skin.
Second-degree burns damage the outer layer of skin as well as the layer underneath.
They cause redness, swelling, as well as blistering.
Third-degree burns damage or may even permanently destroy the deepest layer of skin as well as the tissues underneath. These are the most severe type of burns that require immediate medical attention.
They result in white or blackened, charred skin that may be numb.

To treat first-degree burns, you want to immediately run cold water over the burned area to cool down the skin and to prevent any further damage. You can use products like aloe vera cream, which are good for calming the skin or an antibiotic ointment to help the skin heal itself.
Second-degree burns can be treated with either an antibiotic cream or other creams or ointments prescribed by a doctor.
The most serious type of burns, third-degree burns, require immediate medical attention and may even require undergoing surgery of skin grafting or the use of synthetic skin. Third-degree burns covering large parts of the body may need more intensive treatments such as antibiotics to prevent infection which can cause further complications.

Remember to always be cautious when
working with heat to reduce the risk of burns.
Make sure to:
▶ Wear appropriate gear to protect yourself from thermal heat
▶ Lift lids of boiling pots away from you so that steam goes out
away from you, not towards you.
▶ When using the oven, make sure to open the door of the oven
all the way.
▶ Turn pot handles toward the rear of the stove
▶ Keep electrical appliances away from water
